D4C & D4D & D4E STEERING CLUTCHES

The D4C (models 39A, 40A) and D4D (78A, 22C, 82J, 83J and others) steering clutches went through a small design difference from the earlier D4 4G, 7J, 2T, 5T, and 6U/7U series. The early D4's originally used the riveted on lining style of friction discs and progressed to the bimetallic 3F5504 discs. The D4C and D4D continued with the 3F5504 bimetallic discs while the steel discs and inner driving drums went through a change. The inner driving drums changed from straight splined driving hubs to a ramp style driving drum (8H1174) and this requires the use of the 2H6936 steel separator plates. This design began during the production of the late 6U/7U models. There is also a later style D4C which is totally different from the originsl D4C models 22C 39A and 40A.See parts page files below, toward the bottom of the page for files that you can download. The D4E uses the same oil type clutch discs as the oil type D4D and D4C's. They use a different quantity so check the parts pages for quantities.
Down below on this page you will also find a picture album of the basic removal and disassembly of the bevel gear cross shaft and the steering clutch packs. This is a job you should not be afraid of as you can use fairly common tools available for the job, You do not have to hire it done!

D4D machines developed further and the steering clutches were offered with OIL CLUTCHES as an option, and finally the Oil Type Steering Clutches became standard. We also carry those discs and they can be seen underneath the Dry Type discs and parts.

D4D 8Y6306 NEW BANDS !!!Sometimes your brake band is worn or rusted out so thin that it is no longer usable. Sometimes it has some subtle bends, slightly out of shape, or has wallowed out rivet holes or rusted out boltholes. Often, if you followed service instructions for brake band removal, you probably destroyed one or two sections!! This makes installing new linings difficult. They almost always have broken off carriage bolts or bolts so old that they are no longer trustworthy. We use the newer style brake linings for these brake bands.

The 'T' bar puller can be used with the center push-bolt or a
hydraulic cylinder.

We have a lot of misc pins
laying around but this chunk
of steel fit perfectly.

On a D2 or a D4 the clutches
are pressed off end of bevel
gear cross shaft. On
D5 D6 D7's you press off a tapered splined stub shaft and flange.

Removal of bearing cage and
bearing makes disassembly
easier.
Don't forget to remove set
screws in retainer nut!!

When you press down on the compression tool you want something to keep the studs in place so get a spacer to keep studs from dropping when you turn the clutch over.

You can use a press like we usually do but unless you do a lot of these clutches a simple piece of all-thread is all that you need. Anchor it through your work bench or table.

Place compression tool and add a washer to disperse the pressure over the face of the tool. Otherwise you can end up with a concave tool!

With your spacer underneath to keep your studs in place (shown above)
and compression tool on top
you are ready to compress the springs.

As the springs compress the end of the studs will gain clearance until the locks
are free from the retainers.

Remove all of the locks and be careful not to lose any!
When you put these back in you apply grease to the locks
keep them in place.

Release all pressure and remove compression tool. You can now remove retainers and springs.

Now is time to check measurements on springs.
if any are shorter than the others by 1/8' it should be replaced. It is probably a good practice just to replace them due to low cost and the labor involved if you have to go back in there again!

Now you can remove all the parts for inspection of discs and components.

Minor rippling on the inner drum is fine.

Make sure stud holes on pressure plate are not wallowed out or worn too far below the surface.
