This article provides steps to help you upgrade the firmware on the following Vodafone modems:

Before you begin

Telecom operator Vodafone has launched a new Vodafone R217 4G MiFi device in the country. This device comes with dimensions of 87.6×59.6×12.9mm and weighs 78 grams. It offers 150 Mbps downlink and 50 Mbps Uplink speeds. It uses 800/900/1800/2100 Mhz bands for LTE connection, and 900/1800 Mhz bands for GSM. We recommend that you backup your modem's configuration. To find out how, select your modem and follow the steps for 'Back up your configuration':

Please note: This option is not available on the Vodafone B525.

How your settings could be affected

In most cases you will be able to update your modem's firmware without any impact to your services. However, it is important that you are aware that this firmware update:

• Could remove any custom or advanced configuration settings in your modem
• May change the current default Admin password of your device
• If you have a phone(s) attached to your modem, there will be a disruption to services during the upgrade. You can minimize the impact by backing up and restoring your modem configuration.

Steps

Select your modem:

Vodafone Ultra Hub and Ultra Hub Plus

1. Download the firmware file to your computer:
   > Download Ultra Hub firmware
   > Ultra Hub Plus
   
2. Open a web browser and go to 192.168.1.1
   The Welcome screen appears
3. Complete the following fields:
   • Username: vodafone
   • Password: You can find this on the bottom of your modem
     
4. Click Log In
   The Overview screen appears
5. Click the Settings tab
   
6. On the top drop-down menu, select Advanced Mode
   
7. From the left-hand menu, click Firmware Update
   The Firmware Update screen appears
8. In the Manual Firmware Update section, click Select File
   
9. Select the downloaded firmware and click Install update
   The Firmware Update confirmation pop up appears
10. Click Apply
    The uploading Firmware File pop up appears
    After the file is uploaded, the updated Firmware will begin installing
    The firmware upgrade process takes about 5 minutes
    Please ensure you do not turn of your modem while the Firmware is being installed

Vodafone HG659

• Download the firmware file and save it to an easily accessible location on your computer
  • Filename: HG659-16V100R001C206B026_main.bin
  • File size: Approximately 18MB
• Browse to your modem's admin page (usually http://192.168.1.1 by default)and log in with the following details:
  • Default username Admin
  • Default password, either:
    VF-NZhg659 (note - case sensitive)
    or
    @ and then the last eight digits of your modem's serial number. (E.g. @12345678)
    
• Before continuing, ensure that you have backed up your modem configuration
• Click the Maintain tab
  
• Click Device Management
  
• Click Firmware upgrade
• Click File and browse to the firmware file location on your computer
• Select the .bin firmware file, and click Upgrade
  • Wait for the firmware upgrade to complete (this may take between 10 to 15 minutes and your modem will automatically restart when it completes)
  • Do not navigate away from the page
• After the modem restarts, the modem interface appears. The firmware upgrade is now complete and your modem will automatically re-establish an internet connection. If you have a phone connected to your modem, the configuration file will automatically be downloaded and applied approximately 5-10 minutes after the upgrade.

Below is a list of changes in August 2016 firmware release.

• Separation of 2.4GHz and 5GHz SSIDs
• Improvement in 5GHz auto channel selection
• Update to DTMF signalling to improved compatibility.

N.B. Post upgrade, the modem will show 2 wireless networks instead of 1. The 2.4GHz network will show the SSID name, whereas the 5GHz network will now show the SSID name followed by -5g.

You will need to select either one or both depending on which network their device is capable of using with the preference being 5GHz where possible.

Vodafone B818

1. Open a browser and go to 192.168.1.1
   
2. Enter your password
   Note: The default password is listed on the modem sticker
   
3. From the top-menu, click Advanced
   
4. From the left-side menu, click Updates
   
5. From the options below, select how you'd like to update your firmware

Automatically

6. Enable the Overnight updates toggle
   
   
   
7. Click Check for Updates
   

Manually

6. Click Local Update
   The Local Update popup appears
   
7. Browse for the downloaded file on your computer and then click Update
   

Vodafone B315

You can update your modem’s firmware using your PC connected to the modem via Wi-Fi or an Ethernet cable; or using an app on your smartphone (iOS or Android) connecting via Wi-Fi.

Please note that the firmware update process will take about 15-20 minutes.

The current firmware version is: 21.329.01.01.1085

Update your modem’s firmware using your computer

Please ensure your computer is connected to your modem’s Wi-Fi or connected directly using an Ethernet cable.

1. Using a web browser, log into your modem using the address http://192.168.1.1
2. You will see a notification that the update is available
   
3. Login as an admin user
   The default username and password are both ‘admin’
   
4. You will see a prompt to update your password, click LATER
   
5. Select UPDATE NOW to start the process
   
6. The software will begin downloading and then installing onto your modem
   
7. Once completed, you will see a notification that update is done
   
8. Login as an admin user
   The default username and password are both ‘admin’
   
9. Check your SSID (Wi-Fi name)
   
10. Select Auto Update, click FINISH
    
11. If you have the default admin login and password, you will be prompted to update this
    
12. You'll then have the option to update your Wi-Fi name
13. The modem will then save your new configuration and confirm with SUCCESS
    
14. You can then review the settings and you're done.

Update your modem’s firmware using your iOS/Apple device

Please note you will need the HUAWEI HiLink (Mobile WiFi) app, which is available for free from the Apple App Store - search for HUAWEI HiLink and download. Also available for iPad.

Please ensure your device is connected to the Wi-Fi from your B315 modem.

1. Open the HUAWEI HiLink app
2. The app will prompt you for login details for your device
3. Login as an admin user
   The default username and password are both ‘admin’
4. You will see a notification that an update is available, click UPDATE
   
5. The software will start downloading to your modem
   
6. Once downloaded the modem will start updating itself
   
7. Your modem will shut off the Wi-Fi connection and once available again you will need to reconnect to your Wi-Fi once the modem has completed updating its software and restored the Wi-Fi.
   
8. If you have the default admin login and password, you will be prompted to update this
   
9. You'll need to enter ‘admin’ as your current password and think of a new one and confirm it
   
10. You'll then be prompted to login as administrator - use your new password!
11. In the app, tap the SETTINGS icon - blue gear image top right to check on your device’s settings.
    
12. There you'll be able to see info about your device as well as where to see when updates are available in the future.
    

Update your modem’s firmware using your Android device

Please note you will need the HUAWEI HiLink (Mobile WiFi) app, which is available for free from Google Play - search for HUAWEI HiLink and download.

Please ensure your device is connected to the Wi-Fi from your B315 modem.

The app will prompt you for login details for your device.

1. Login as an admin user
   The default username and password are both ‘admin’
2. You will see a message about using the default password, please hit CANCEL
   
3. You will see a notification that an update is available, click UPDATE
   
4. The software will start downloading to your modem
   
5. Once downloaded the modem will start updating itself ‘The device is rebooting … please wait’
   
6. Your modem will shut off the Wi-Fi connection and once available again you will need to reconnect to your Wi-Fi once the modem has completed updating its software and restored the Wi-Fi.
   
7. If you have the default admin login and password, you will be prompted to update this
   
8. You'll need to enter ‘admin’ as your current password and think of a new one and confirm it
   
9. You'll then be prompted to login as administrator - use your new password!
   
10. In the app, tap the SETTINGS icon - blue gear image top right to check on your device’s settings. There you'll be able to see info about your device as well as where to see when updates are available in the future.
    

Vodafone B525

1. Open a browser and go to 192.168.1.1
   The Home screen appears
   
2. From the top-right side of your screen, click Log in
   
3. Complete the following fields
   • User name:
   • Password:
     Please note: Your username and password were created when you first set up your modem
     
4. Click Log in
   
5. Click the Update tab
   The Update screen appears
   
6. From the options below, select how you'd like to update your firmware:
   

Automatically

7. From the left-side menu, select Online Update
   
8. Click Check for Updates
   

If there is a new firmware version available, you are given the option to download it.

Manually select a file on your computer

7. From the left-side menu, select Local Update
   
8. Click Browse..
   The File Upload window appears
   
9. Find the file and click Open
   
10. Click Update
    

After the update is complete, a confirmation message appears.

• Insert the Sim card in the router

• Plug-in the router

• Open the Wifi connection of the device you wish to use

• Change the password of the router for more security:
  Type the router default gateway IP in the address bar: 192.168.8.1
  Type the default administrator router’s credentials (User name & Password): admin
  Click Change Now, and type the current password: admin, then type the new password twice in the next two text boxes then to click Apply
